Gnawa Music Workshop : Learn UNESCO Percussion with a Master

Duration

2 hours

Tour Type

Our Gnawa music workshop in Marrakech and in Essaouira offers you something genuinely rare — direct access to one of Africa’s most powerful and spiritually significant musical traditions, taught by a practicing Gnawa master musician in an authentic medina setting. This is not a performance for tourists. This is a hands-on learning experience that places real instruments in your hands and real cultural knowledge in your heart.

In 2019, UNESCO inscribed Gnawa music on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. When you join our Gnawa music workshop in Marrakech, you are engaging with a living tradition of the highest cultural significance.

What Is Gnawa Music and Why Does It Matter?

Gnawa music is one of Morocco’s most extraordinary cultural treasures — a tradition born from the experiences of sub-Saharan African communities brought to Morocco centuries ago, which evolved over generations into a profound spiritual and healing practice.

At the heart of Gnawa culture is the Lila — an all-night ceremonial ritual combining music, chant, incense, colour, and trance, performed to invoke the healing power of spiritual entities known as mluk. The music that drives the Lila is hypnotic, cyclical, and deeply physical — built on the driving pulse of the krakeb (iron hand cymbals) and the low, resonant voice of the guembri (a three-stringed bass lute with a camel-skin resonating chamber).

The Gnawa tradition has also had a profound influence on world music. In the 1960s and 70s, artists including Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones came to Morocco specifically to experience Gnawa music. Today it continues to inspire jazz, blues, soul, and electronic musicians around the globe.

Our Gnawa music workshop in Marrakech gives you the chance to experience this tradition from the inside — not as a spectator, but as a participant.

What You Will Learn in the Gnawa Music Workshop in Marrakech

Your workshop is led by a certified Gnawa Maalem — a master musician who has trained in the tradition since childhood and holds the knowledge to transmit it authentically. The two-hour session is structured to give you both practical skills and deep cultural understanding.

The Krakeb — Iron Voice of the Gnawa

You will begin with the krakeb: the iron hand cymbals that provide the rhythmic heartbeat of all Gnawa music. Your Maalem will teach you the fundamental interlocking patterns that characterise Gnawa rhythm — a polyrhythmic system in which multiple players lock together to create a single, pulsing groove. Learning the krakeb is the foundation of understanding how Gnawa music works.

The Guembri — Soul of the Gnawa

You will then move to the guembri: the three-stringed bass lute that is the voice and spiritual centre of Gnawa music. Made from cedar wood and stretched camel skin, the guembri produces a deep, buzzing tone unlike any other instrument in the world. Your Maalem will teach you the basic playing position, right-hand plucking technique, and the foundational melodic patterns (called tagnawit) used in ceremonial contexts.

The Spiritual Language of Gnawa

Beyond technique, your Gnawa music workshop in Marrakech will introduce you to the spiritual and symbolic language of the tradition. You will learn about the mluk — the spiritual entities associated with different colours, incenses, and musical modes — and understand how music functions as a vehicle for healing and spiritual connection in Gnawa culture.

Playing Together

The session ends with a collective playing experience — instructor and participants performing together in the call-and-response patterns that define Gnawa ceremony. Many participants describe this as one of the most moving and memorable moments of their entire time in Morocco.
